Heard that the nurses uniform in Kenya is changing? Not sure what to buy before your next shift?
The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) has published Uniform Guidelines for Nurses and Midwives. Scrubs Kenya has read them and summarised the main points below in plain English, so you buy the right thing the first time.
Who sets the rules
The Nursing Council of Kenya issued the guidelines under the Nurses and Midwives Act. The Act gives the Council the power to prescribe badges, insignia and uniforms.
Your hospital may add its own rules on top. Always check with your nursing office too.
Colours for clinical nurses and midwives
Tops are white. Female uniforms have navy blue trims on the arms, collar and pockets.
Trousers and skirts are navy blue. Male nurses wear a white shirt.
Sweaters are navy blue.
Colours for nurse managers
Managers wear grey blazers, skirts, dresses or trousers. Male managers wear a white shirt and a maroon tie.
Educators and advanced practice nurses may wear a uniform like the managers or a lab coat.
Where can nurses wear scrubs?
The guidelines say scrubs should be worn only in ICU and HDU, the burns unit and the operating theatre.
In those areas the guidelines set scrubs in sky blue.
Name tags, shoes and socks
Every nurse and midwife wears a name tag showing their name and designation.
Shoes are black or brown leather, closed, low heeled, quiet and slip resistant. Socks are black or navy blue.
What should you buy?
Ward nurse or midwife: a white top with navy trousers or a navy skirt, as your hospital sets.
Theatre, ICU, HDU or burns unit: sky blue scrubs.
Nurse manager: grey.
Student: check your college list first, then buy.
