Start with your hospital rule

Many hospitals and colleges in Kenya set colours by role. Nurses, midwives, clinical officers and theatre staff may each have a colour. Students often have a colour per year or course. Always check with your in charge or college before you buy.

For nurses and midwives, read the Scrubs Kenya guide on the new nurses uniform and the Nursing Council of Kenya guidelines on this blog.

The most popular colours

Colours you can get at Scrubs Kenya include: • Blues: navy blue, royal blue, galaxy blue, sky blue, Caribbean and indigo • Greens: theatre green, teal green, jungle green, forest green, sage green and olive green • Reds and purples: maroon, wine red, burgundy, eggplant, grape purple and magenta • Soft colours: pastel pink, pastel blue, pastel green, lilac and rose pink • Neutrals: black, white, grey, ash grey, beige and chocolate

Which colour is most practical?

• Dark colours such as navy, black and wine hide marks and look neat for longer • Theatre green and teal are calm under bright lights and common in theatre • White looks crisp but shows every mark, so it suits clinics and labs more than busy wards • Pastels feel gentle and friendly, which many paediatric and maternity teams like

What your colour says

Patients notice colour first. Navy and black look professional and calm. Soft pinks and blues feel warm and caring. Bright colours help patients find you on a busy ward.

Meet the founder

Dr Joanne Medina

Founder, Scrubs Kenya

Ever been told there are no surgical caps left on a busy ward? Dr Joanne Medina was, as a final year medical student. So she started making her own.

That small fix grew into Scrubs Kenya. Today Scrubs Kenya dresses nurses, doctors, clinical officers and students across Kenya.

Dr Joanne is a medical doctor who trained at Egerton University. She grew up in Kitale and now lives and works in Nairobi. She knows how a twelve hour shift feels, so every Scrubs Kenya set is chosen for comfort, pockets and fabric that lasts.

She also hosts the Medina Dinner, a networking evening for healthcare professionals, and interviews leaders in Kenyan healthcare on her YouTube channel.
